Frequently Asked Questions

QDoes a military spouse get a security clearance from their service member?

No. A clearance belongs to one person. It comes from that person's own investigation and adjudication. Marriage, a military ID card, and base access grant none of it.

QCan we sponsor a security clearance for a military spouse?

Yes, under the same rules as anyone else. The person needs US citizenship. Your company needs its own facility clearance standing. The role needs a real classified contract need.

QHow long can a spouse be out of cleared work before the clearance is gone?

The number that matters is 24 months. Past that, a new investigation is generally needed. Inside that window, reinstatement is often possible. Your FSO pulls the record for the real answer.

QCan a cleared military spouse do classified work remotely?

Usually not. Classified material is stored and handled in approved areas. A home office does not qualify. Remote work for a cleared spouse normally means unclassified work.

QAre military spouses eligible for SkillBridge?

No. SkillBridge is for service members nearing the end of their service. Spouses cannot take part. Build your spouse pipeline through other channels.

QIs ITAR US person status the same as a security clearance?

No. ITAR US person status covers citizens, lawful permanent residents, and certain protected individuals. Clearance eligibility is a separate and stricter gate. Do not swap the terms in a job posting.

QHow does our company join MSEP?

You apply through the MSEP partner portal. Your organization needs a business foundation of more than two years. You cannot charge spouses fees for job opportunities. Partners sign the MSEP Statement of Support.

QCan we ask a spouse candidate when they will move next?

Skip that question. State your remote and on-site policy up front. Then let the candidate decide whether the role fits their situation.
