How the score works.
No black box. You start at 100 points, and you lose points for the things that trip up a civilian recruiter. The same resume always gets the same score, because the math never changes. Here is exactly what costs you points.
Keywords a job in your field tends to ask for are listed too, no points off, because there is no posting to match yet.
What your score means
- 80 to 100. Civilian-ready. Now tailor it to a real job.
- 60 to 79. Readable, but it has holes. Usually a few quick fixes.
- Under 60. Not there yet. It’s not your experience, it’s the wording.
Add a job posting and you get a match instead
Paste a posting and the score becomes a match percentage. It shows how much of what the job asks for your resume actually proves.
- 75% and up. Strong fit.
- 50 to 74%. In the running.
- Under 50%. A long shot as written.
If your resume only partly shows something, it counts as half. Same if the posting lists it as “preferred” rather than required.
Who this is for.
Getting out.
Nobody warns you that the first resume you write may be in a language the hiring manager does not speak. “Platoon Sergeant” means a lot to us. To them it may mean nothing. This shows you where that is happening on your page, line by line.
Out for years, want a better job.
Your resume is probably fine. Fine is not the same as matched. Run it, then tailor it to the posting you actually want.
Going federal, served or not.
Pick Federal above. The score is whether a rater can credit the page as written: hours per week, month-and-year dates, two pages. Series and grade only on federal civilian jobs. Competency headers are a Best Military Resume convention so HR can map keywords, not a USAJOBS requirement, and they cost no points. Military jobs are not dinged for a missing supervisor or GS code. Paste an announcement and it becomes a match against that posting.

Moves and gaps are not the problem. How they read is. The scan grades the writing, not the timeline.

Is it really free?
Yes. The score, the deductions, one flagged line, and the section-by-section verdict show with no account and no email. Your email sends every flagged line and mails you the report. A free BMR account is what tailors it for a real job, the same way they used it.
Do you keep my resume?
Yes, for 30 days, and that is the point. Uploading the same resume twice is where most people quit. Sign up inside those 30 days and the resume you just scored becomes your base resume, already there when you land. Don't sign up and the file and the text are deleted. Details on the privacy page.
What does a 71 mean?
On Private, 71 is Readable, with holes. On Federal, 71 is Credit, with holes. The deductions under the number tell you which holes and how much each one cost. Fix the top one and run it again; the number moves because the math is fixed, not because the mood changed.
How many times can I run it?
One a day, three in all. A match scan against a posting on the resume you already scored today does not use up the day. Past that, sign up free and tailor it inside BMR, where the rewrite is the product.
