Frequently asked questions
How long should a federal resume be?
Two pages for most federal jobs. Always check the announcement, because some are exceptions: OPM scopes the two-page rule to Title 5 positions, and VA Title 38 and hybrid clinical announcements can set their own limit. USAJOBS caps the resume field itself at two pages, which is why a longer resume for an exempt announcement goes in as an attached document.
What does a federal resume include that a civilian one does not?
Full dates and hours per week for every job, the employer and location on each block, and duty bullets written to the announcement so a human rater can match your experience to the grade. The examples here show every one of those fields filled in.
Do I still need separate KSA essays?
For most announcements, no. Since the 2010 hiring reform the knowledge, skills and abilities are read from the resume itself, which is why each bullet in these examples names the system, the scope and the result instead of pointing at an essay.
Can I use one of these on USAJOBS?
Use them as the pattern, not the text. Every example page has a PDF that prints the same resume the same way, and the builder writes yours in this format from your own evals or old resume.
