Darren’s transition

Darren gave the Air Force twenty years, from 2004 to 2024. Airborne air control squadrons, then the training side.

When he started looking, he went at it like an operator. In three months he sent about 80 federal applications and 30 civilian ones. One hundred and ten total.

Then the numbers came back. Roughly 75 percent of his federal applications earned a referral, which means his resume was clearing the review and reaching a real human being. He interviewed for five positions.

If you've ever sat at zero referrals on USAJOBS, that 75 percent is the whole story. The applications were never the problem. The resume was, right up until it wasn't.

He took a human resources role at a university, largely for the tuition benefit it gives his kids. Federal is still the long game, and with a referral rate like that he can go get it when he's ready.
