David’s transition

David spent fifteen years in Army medicine. Forward surgical teams, combat support hospitals, a field hospital, and a medical battalion. The kind of work where the outcome is measured in whether somebody makes it.

Federal hiring is slow. He applied, and then he waited months.

Long enough that he stopped believing it would happen. His words: he had given up.

Then the final job offer came through.

He wrote to say he was still in disbelief. The wait had run so long that he'd written the whole thing off, and it landed anyway.

Federal timelines can break good candidates who would have been fine on paper. The referral comes, then nothing for weeks, then nothing for more weeks, and somewhere in there people decide it isn't going to happen and stop checking their email.

David kept checking.
