Jonathan’s transition

Jonathan is an Army veteran with a civilian career already under way. He was not trying to land his first job out of uniform. He wanted a better one, and he was willing to run private-sector and federal searches at the same time to get it.

He built his base resume in Best Military Resume in January 2026. From February through August he tailored it 28 times. Federal versions were built to the announcement. Private versions were written in each posting's own words, most of them aimed at data roles. Every version came off the same base, so nothing he had done got lost between them.

That is seven months of steady work, and for most of it nothing came back. Then, in September, two postings turned into offers in the same week.

The one he took was not a data job at all. He was hired as a mid-level UI/UX developer at $115,000 a year.

Asked what made the difference, he pointed at the resume itself: "I think being able to articulate and demonstrate a versatility using various technologies and ability to learn new technologies on the fly which I think my resume conveyed."

That is the part worth taking. He aimed at one field and got hired in another, because the resume showed the whole range of what he could do instead of narrowing him to a title.
