How to Recruit SkillBridge Interns for Cleared Roles

10 min read
A SkillBridge intern is still on active duty. Their clearance eligibility has not gone stale, because they have not separated yet. That is the whole advantage.

Frequently Asked Questions

QCan a SkillBridge intern work on classified projects at my company?

Usually no. Their clearance eligibility travels with them, but access does not. Access needs a real need to know. It also needs a signed non-disclosure agreement and a company cleared at that level. Plan the internship around unclassified work.

QHow old does my business have to be to host a SkillBridge intern?

Your business must be established for at least three years to host. That gate comes from paragraph 4.1.6 of the DoD SkillBridge MOU. Federal, state and local government offices are the exception. A company under three years old cannot host, period.

QDo I pay a SkillBridge intern?

No. The participant stays on active duty for the whole program. The military keeps paying their salary and their benefits. The host pays no wage and no stipend. You also cannot put them on payroll before their separation date.

QWhen should I make the job offer to a SkillBridge intern?

You can make an offer during the program. Employment normally starts after the separation date. You cannot pay them before that date. Aim for the halfway point of the internship so the paperwork has room.

QDoes a clearance expire 24 months after someone leaves the military?

That is not quite the rule. A break in employment longer than about 24 months matters. The person generally cannot be granted access until a new investigation is done. Continuous vetting enrollment can change the answer, so ask your security officer.

QCan my company sponsor a clearance without a facility clearance?

No. Sponsorship rests on classified work your company already holds under contract. A company also cannot apply for its own facility clearance. A government contracting activity or a cleared prime has to sponsor it.

QWhat is the difference between clearance eligibility and access?

Eligibility is a government determination about the person. Access is permission to see specific material at one company under one contract. Eligibility can follow the person to a new employer. Access stays behind.

QIs SkillBridge acceptance the same as a job offer?

No. Getting into the program is not a hire. The member locked in a training placement, not employment. You still run your own interview and offer process before anyone joins your team.
