Frequently Asked Questions

QDoes it cost the employer anything to host a SkillBridge intern?

No, you do not pay the service member a salary. The Department of Defense continues to pay their military salary and benefits during the program. Your company provides the training, the role, and a safe work environment. The only costs you carry are the normal costs of running a training program.

QHow long does it take to become an authorized SkillBridge host?

Applications are accepted during set windows, typically Fall (October to early December) and Spring (February to early April). After you apply, the Military-Civilian Transition Office reviews your application and training plan. If approved, they send an MOU for signature. Once signed, you are listed as an authorized partner. Check the official SkillBridge site for the current window and review timeline.

QWhat are the eligibility requirements for a SkillBridge host company?

Your organization must be an established business for at least three years, with exceptions for federal, state, and local government. You cannot be owned or controlled by a foreign government. You must agree to accept a minimum number of candidates per year based on company size, and maintain suitable full-time positions for participants.

QDoes the company have to hire the SkillBridge intern at the end?

You are not legally forced to hire any individual. But the program is built to lead to jobs. The MOU sets a goal that 75 percent or more of participants who complete a program receive a qualifying offer of suitable employment. Federal, state, and municipal agencies are exempt from that 75 percent threshold, and instead carry a separate 85 percent offer-rate goal. You should host with the genuine intent to hire.

QWhat is the SkillBridge Memorandum of Understanding?

The MOU is the agreement between your organization and the Military-Civilian Transition Office under the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness. It makes you an authorized host. It spells out your obligations, including providing real training, not paying the service member, keeping a lawful workplace, and reporting outcome data.

QCan a small business become a SkillBridge host?

Yes. A business with 200 or fewer employees qualifies as long as it has been established for at least three years and meets the other rules. Small businesses agree to accept at least one candidate per year. The candidate minimum scales up with company size.

QHow do we find service members to fill our SkillBridge roles?

Once authorized, your opportunities are listed on the official SkillBridge site where service members search and apply. To build a steady pipeline of qualified, hiring-ready candidates, you can also partner with a platform like Best Military Resume, which adds over 1,000 new military-community profiles every month.
