Federal chaplains serve at military installations, VA hospitals, federal prisons, and other government facilities, supporting people of all faiths and backgrounds.
Federal Chaplains typically earn between $63,163 (GS-11 Step 1) and $117,034 (GS-13 Step 10) under the 2025 GS pay scale. Senior chaplains and supervisory positions can reach GS-14/15. Military chaplains transitioning to civilian roles often enter at comparable grades to their prior rank.
GS-0060 positions have a positive education requirement: candidates must have a master's degree in divinity, theology, or equivalent from an accredited institution. Additionally, chaplains must be ordained or credentialed by a recognized religious organization and have completed clinical pastoral education.
