Official OPM qualification standards for GS-0620
⚠️ IMPORTANT: This series is for Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) or Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs), NOT Registered Nurses. For RN positions, see Series 0610 (Nurse).
Licensure (Required for all grades): Must be licensed (or have applied for license) as a practical/vocational nurse in a U.S. State, territory, or D.C. Provisional appointments may be made pending licensure, but license must be obtained during probation.
Grade Requirements:
| Grade | Requirements |
|---|---|
| GS-3 | Licensure only (entry level for new LPNs) |
| GS-4 | Licensure + 6 months nursing experience OR qualifying education |
| GS-5+ | Licensure + 1 year experience at next lower grade |
GS-4 Education Alternatives:
Why GS-3 Entry Level? LPNs/LVNs complete approximately 1 year of training (certificate program), compared to RNs who require 2-4 year degrees. The GS-3 entry level reflects this shorter training pathway while still requiring professional licensure.

GS-0620 Practical Nurses (LPNs/LVNs) provide basic nursing care under supervision of registered nurses or physicians. They monitor vital signs, assist with daily living, administer medications, document patient information, and report condition changes at VA hospitals, IHS clinics, and federal medical facilities.
GS-0620 positions range from GS-3 ($27,434) for entry to GS-7 ($42,679-$55,486) for senior LPNs. Most positions are GS-4 to GS-6 ($30,795-$49,927). VA may offer additional pay above base GS. Locality pay of 15-40% applies, plus excellent federal health and retirement benefits.
Graduation from an approved practical or vocational nursing program AND current LPN/LVN license in a U.S. state or territory. Higher grades require specialized nursing experience. IV certification and medication administration credentials expand opportunities. No degree required—certificate programs qualify.
Military LPN training and experience directly qualifies. Your 68W (Combat Medic) or equivalent training may also qualify for entry-level positions with additional credentialing. Veterans with LPN/LVN licenses are highly valued at VA where understanding veteran health issues enhances patient care.
Entry at GS-3/4 with progression to GS-6/7. Many LPNs pursue RN education (often with VA tuition assistance) to transition to GS-0610 Registered Nurse positions at higher grades. Lead LPN positions and specialty units offer advancement within the series.
Search USAJOBS for 'Licensed Practical Nurse' or 'LPN.' VA hospitals and Community Living Centers are the largest employers. Also check IHS, BOP, and DoD civilian facilities. Emphasize your clinical experience and specialty training. Veterans with medical backgrounds have advantages at VA facilities.
