Who Actually Qualifies for MSP

You're eligible for Military Spouse Preference if you meet these criteria:

• You're married to an active duty service member
• Your spouse has PCS'd to a new duty station (you get MSP at each new location)
• You haven't already used MSP at this duty station to accept a permanent position
• You're seeking employment within the commuting area of the new duty station

How to Actually Use MSP on USAJOBS

When you create your USAJOBS profile, there's a section for hiring paths. You need to select "Military Spouses" as one of your eligibilities. But don't stop there - you also need to upload documentation.

Hiring Our Heroes is a U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation program that runs multiple initiatives for military spouses. Unlike government programs, these connect you directly with private sector employers who have committed to hiring from the military community.

Military Spouse Employment Partnership (MSEP)

MSEP is a partnership between the Department of Defense and private employers who have committed to recruiting, hiring, promoting, and retaining military spouses. There are over 600 partner organizations, including major names you'd recognize.

The MSEP job portal lets you search positions specifically from these partner companies. The advantage here is that these employers already understand military spouse challenges - they're not going to see your varied work history or location changes as red flags.

Military Spouse Fellowship Program
