Frequently Asked Questions

QDo you need a finance degree for a GS-1160 job?

No. The OPM standard for the Financial Analysis series lists education or experience. The education route asks for major study in finance, economics, accounting, or a related field. The experience route asks for financial analysis and evaluation work instead.

QWhat is the difference between GS-1160 and GS-0501?

GS-1160 covers analysis and evaluation of financial data for decisions. GS-0501 is the broader financial administration and program series. Read the series code on the announcement, because it sets the qualification rules.

QWhat counts as GS-1160 specialized experience?

OPM describes financial analysis and evaluation work above GS-5. It rests on deep knowledge of corporate finance and any specialty finance field the job needs. It also rests on knowing how organizations are financially structured and run. You need one year of it at the next lower grade level.

QDoes military contracting experience count for GS-1160?

It can. Contracting officers review whether a company has adequate financial resources before award. Price analysis, cost analysis, and obligation tracking all sit near the 1160 standard. Write those tasks as findings, not duties.

QHow long should a GS-1160 federal resume be?

Two pages is a hard limit for a Title 5 federal resume. It still carries hours per week, month and year dates, and series and grade. Cut the jobs from 20 years ago, not the detail on recent ones.

QWhat grade can a military comptroller apply for in GS-1160?

That depends on the level of your work, not your rank. GS-7 needs one year at the GS-5 level. Each grade above follows the same rule. Read the specialized experience paragraph on the announcement and match it line by line.

QCan graduate school replace experience for GS-1160?

Up to GS-11, yes. One full year of graduate study can qualify you at GS-7. A master's degree can qualify you at GS-9, and a doctorate at GS-11. At GS-12 and above, only experience counts.

QHow do you find GS-1160 jobs on USAJOBS?

Search by the series code 1160 rather than by job title. Agencies title these positions in different ways. A title search can hide openings you would qualify for.
