Frequently Asked Questions

QWhat specialized experience do you need for a GS-0025 park ranger job?

One year at the level just below your target grade. GS-5 asks for one year equal to GS-4. GS-7 asks for one year equal to GS-5. GS-9 asks for one year equal to GS-7. OPM's standard for the series lists law enforcement or investigative work as a qualifying example.

QCan you get a GS-0025 job without a college degree?

Yes. OPM's standard lays out education and experience as separate paths at GS-5, GS-7, and GS-9. One year of qualifying experience can stand on its own. You can also mix partial education with experience at any grade where both columns are open.

QHow long should a GS-0025 federal resume be?

Two pages max under OPM's Merit Hiring Plan. That is tight for a full career. Cut the jobs that do not touch the announcement. Write the one year that proves your grade in full detail.

QDoes military police experience count toward a park ranger job?

OPM's own example list for the series names law enforcement or investigative work. No park setting is attached to that example. Write it in the announcement's language and show hours per week. Show the size of the area and the public contact you handled.

QWhat is the difference between GS-0025 and GL-0025?

Same job series, different pay plan. GL is the law enforcement pay plan. Law enforcement ranger jobs often post under GL and add extra screens, like holding a law enforcement commission. Read the announcement carefully before you reuse wording from an older one.

QDo you need hours per week on a GS-0025 federal resume?

Yes, on every work entry. Federal experience credit runs on hours, not job titles. Twelve months at 20 hours a week does not add up to one year of full time experience.

QWhat is a selective factor on a park ranger announcement?

An extra screen layered on top of the qualification standard. A law enforcement commission is the common one for this series. If the announcement lists a selective factor and you do not have it, move on. No resume wording gets you past it.
