Civilian Career Paths & Job Guide
Everything you need to translate your YN experience into a civilian career — salary data, companies hiring, resume examples, and certifications by career path.
Coast Guard Yeomen (YN) are the administrative backbone of every Coast Guard unit. From small boat stations to district offices to large cutters, YNs keep the paperwork, personnel records, travel orders, pay documents, and legal files running on time. Without Yeomen, commands grind to a halt.
YNs learn their trade at A-School in Petaluma, California. The 13-week course covers correspondence, directives, reports, travel claims, pay issues, personnel records, and legal administration. After A-school, YNs can serve at any type of Coast Guard unit. Some specialize in legal work (courts-martial, administrative separations) or financial management (unit budgets, purchase cards).
What makes YNs valuable to civilian employers is the sheer breadth of administrative skills. A YN with 4-6 years of service has managed personnel records for hundreds of people, processed thousands of travel orders, handled sensitive legal documents, and kept a command running through inspections and audits. That experience translates directly to office management, human resources, executive assistant, and administrative services roles in the civilian world.
The Coast Guard is a small service. YNs often wear more hats than their counterparts in the Navy or Army. A YN at a small boat station might be the only admin person for 30+ people. That means handling HR, travel, pay, legal, correspondence, and front-desk duties all at once. Civilian employers love that kind of range.
Coast Guard Yeomen have strong options in the private sector. The administrative and office management skills you built in the Coast Guard are in demand across every industry. Companies need people who can manage records, coordinate travel, handle sensitive documents, and keep an office organized.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (May 2024), the median annual wage for administrative services managers is $106,470 (O*NET 11-3012.00). Executive secretaries and executive administrative assistants earn a median of $72,880 (O*NET 43-6011.00). Secretaries and administrative assistants (except legal, medical, and executive) earn a median of $46,010 (O*NET 43-6014.00). Human resources specialists earn a median of $67,650 (O*NET 13-1071.00).
The path you take depends on your rank and experience. A junior YN (E-3 to E-5) will likely start in administrative assistant or office coordinator roles. A senior YN (E-6 and above) with supervisory experience can target office manager, administrative services manager, or HR coordinator positions right away.
Industries that hire the most admin professionals include healthcare, finance, government contracting, tech companies, and law firms. Defense contractors are a strong fit because they already understand military veterans and often need people with security clearances to handle sensitive documents.
Your Coast Guard background gives you an edge that many civilian candidates lack. You have experience working under pressure, meeting strict deadlines, handling classified material, and managing multiple priorities at once. Those soft skills matter as much as the technical ones.

Not everyone wants to stay in a related field. These career paths leverage your transferable skills — leadership, risk management, logistics, project planning — in completely different industries.
Senior YNs already run administrative operations for entire units. Managing office services, staff, facilities, and budgets is what admin services managers do. This is the most natural leadership-track pivot.
YNs process personnel actions, maintain records, and handle evaluations. That is HR work in uniform. SHRM-CP certification makes the transition smoother.
YNs with legal admin experience (courts-martial, NJP, admin boards, UCMJ proceedings) have direct exposure to legal processes. A paralegal certificate builds on that foundation.
YNs coordinate across departments, manage competing deadlines, and keep track of multiple projects at once. Senior YNs who managed inspections, change of command events, or large admin projects have real PM experience.
YNs who improved admin processes, streamlined workflows, or identified inefficiencies at their units have done management analysis. This is a strong path for analytical senior YNs.
Senior YNs train junior Yeomen, develop training plans, and conduct qualification boards. If you enjoyed the training and mentoring part of the job, this is a rewarding career path.
If you are applying to admin jobs at companies that work with the Coast Guard or military, you probably do not need this section. They know what a Yeoman does. They know what Direct Access is.
But if you are applying outside the military world, the hiring manager has no idea what "maintained unit directives library" or "processed PCS travel orders" means. The translations below reframe your YN experience into language that works for non-military industries. These are not just word swaps. They show how to frame and measure your work for a civilian audience.
Use the BMR resume platform to automatically translate your military experience into civilian language.
Which certifications you need depends on where you're headed. Find your target career path below.
SkillBridge Programs: Many companies offer SkillBridge internships in administrative, HR, and office management roles. Check the SkillBridge database for current openings. Large companies like Amazon, Microsoft, and Booz Allen have placed veterans in admin roles through SkillBridge.
IAAP (International Association of Administrative Professionals): The IAAP offers the CAP (Certified Administrative Professional) credential and networking. This is the main professional association for admin professionals.
SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management): If you are targeting HR careers, SHRM membership gives you access to job boards, networking, and the SHRM-CP certification path.
Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS): Free or low-cost certification that proves your skills in Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint. Many testing centers accept GI Bill. Quick win that strengthens any admin resume.
Project Management: The PMP certification (PMI) opens doors to project coordinator and project manager roles. Senior YNs often have enough documented project hours to qualify. GI Bill covers many prep courses.
Paralegal/Legal Assistant: If you worked legal admin in the Coast Guard, a paralegal certificate (6-12 months) can fast-track you into law firm or corporate legal department jobs. Many community colleges offer ABA-approved programs covered by the GI Bill.
Federal Employment (USAJobs): Create your USAJobs profile right away. Do not wait until you separate. Use the "Veterans" filter. Federal resumes are 2 pages max. Build yours at BMR.
Veteran Networking: American Corporate Partners (ACP) provides free mentorship from corporate leaders. You get paired with someone in your target industry. ACP is legitimate and completely free for veterans.
Education Benefits: Your GI Bill covers certification exams, prep courses, and degree programs. Check the GI Bill Comparison Tool before enrolling anywhere.
Clearance Leverage: If you have an active Secret clearance, that saves employers thousands of dollars and months of processing. ClearanceJobs.com lists positions that require active clearances. Do not let yours lapse during transition.
SFL-TAP / Transition Assistance: Take advantage of the Transition Assistance Program workshops. They cover resume writing, interview prep, and benefits briefings. Start early.
